Driving organisation-wide efficiency: Supporting Frontier to boost performance and focus

Frontier logo

Frontier is one of Australia’s most respected investment asset consultants. It manages over $700 billion for superannuation funds, charities, public sector organisations, insurers, and universities. Frontier has built a trusted reputation for independent advice and deep market insight. It helps some of Australia’s key institutions make informed, impactful investment decisions.

Since 2010, Right Lane Consulting has partnered with Frontier on strategic projects. We have supported Frontier’s growth through strategy development, implementation, and transaction-related work. In 2023, our partnership deepened with a major efficiency program across the business.

Aligning efficiency with strategic ambition

Frontier wanted to boost efficiency across its core areas: Consulting, Sector Research, and Investment Strategy. It chose to pursue an organisation-wide approach, not isolated fixes. The goal was clear: free up time for high-value, client-facing work now and in the future.

Frontier engaged Right Lane to lead this efficiency program. Together, we aimed to unlock capacity, reduce duplication, and match tasks to the right people and support. The program also aligned daily operations with Frontier’s long-term strategy. This created a more agile and responsive organisation.

A collaborative, evidence-led approach

We began with a detailed diagnosis. We spoke with Frontier’s leadership team and analysed processes and performance data. Staff also shared their views through surveys and feedback. This work revealed what ran well, where bottlenecks existed, and where improvements could add value.

Based on the evidence, we identified many opportunities. We assessed each one for impact, feasibility, and speed of benefit. From this list, we chose five top priorities for focused delivery. These initiatives aimed to shift ways of working, freeing teams for more strategic work.

Turning insight into action

Once we set the priorities, we moved quickly to implementation. We guided teams through structured problem-solving and mapped resource needs. Clear roles and a practical delivery rhythm kept everyone aligned. We also helped Frontier track benefits and embed accountability.

The five initiatives—ranging from improving internal reporting systems and meeting effectiveness to reviewing the value of core activities and increasing automation—addressed key pain points. Several have already delivered early benefits, such as a noticeable reduction in discretionary non-chargeable time spent across teams, while others have laid important groundwork for ongoing improvement.

Throughout the program, we worked closely with Frontier’s leaders. Together, we ensured the changes fit the culture and ways of working. Teams now embrace new approaches with clarity and a shared sense of purpose.
