Strengthening ACSI’s future impact: a strategic partnership

ACSI represents around 40 asset owners and institutional investors managing over $2.2 trillion. Right Lane Consulting partnered with ACSI to shape its new strategic plan through engaging strategy sessions with staff, board and members. We helped define ACSI’s long-term aspirations, priority focus areas and navigate future scenarios. The result was strong board and member council endorsement for a refreshed mission, vision, a strategy-on-a-page and detailed plan.

Australian Retirement Trust: developing a Target Operating Model (TOM)

Australian Retirement Trust (ART), with over 2.4 million members and $330 billion in funds, engaged Right Lane Consulting to develop a Target Operating Model for its largest division. Working with the Chief Member Officer and 60+ stakeholders, we diagnosed current capabilities, designed a future state structure, and prioritised capability uplift. The outcome: clear alignment on responsibilities, uplift priorities and actionable next steps to deliver a better member experience.

Driving organisation-wide efficiency: Supporting Frontier to boost performance and focus

Frontier, an investment consultant managing over $700 billion, has partnered with Right Lane Consulting since 2010. In 2023, we led a firm-wide efficiency program aligning operations with Frontier’s long-term strategy. Through diagnosis and staff engagement, we identified five high-impact initiatives targeting reporting, meetings, value-add activity and automation. With practical implementation support, Frontier achieved improved alignment, collaboration and early reductions in non-chargeable time, ensuring sustainable efficiency gains across the firm.

Right Lane worked with the Women In Super board to determine our priorities for the organisation at a national level. The process of going through a very professional strategy session, with an Australia-wide regarded consultancy, was a wonderful opportunity for us and a fantastic forum for the board to agree our priorities for the next three years. This process enabled us to focus on a big policy and advocacy push relating to women’s retirement outcomes. It helped the board come to a position of determining to put money from reserves toward this particular campaign. This was very important as this campaign [around women’s retirement outcomes] is something that effects women right throughout the economy.

Meet our team

Gemma Pinnell

Principal

Gemma is a principal at Right Lane Consulting. She has worked in senior positions in superannuation and the labour movement for over two decades. Her areas of expertise are Affordable Housing and Superannuation. Gemma has delivered projects across strategy, policy and program evaluation, new service design and implementation, data and analytics, and transformation. She is focused on partnering with clients to tackle challenging problems and deliver solutions that can be executed to achieve impact.

Experience

Her recent experience has included:

Working alongside an executive director of Australia’s biggest public transport project – to bring their team together, to connect, and align on the key priorities for the team for the next 12-18 months. This included agreeing measures of success and ways of working to deliver their program of work effectively.
Working with the CEO and board of a community affordable housing organisation in Sydney’s west to agree their overall strategic direction and aspiration and consider key strategic questions to set them up for future success and to assess their investment pipeline and growth strategy.
Working with the head of External Affairs of a peak body in the energy industry, Gemma worked collaboratively with the team to develop a set of ‘mega themes’ to better define their work priorities and align their work to the broader organisational goals.

Prior to joining Right Lane Consulting, Gemma was director of Strategic Engagement at Industry Super Australia where she was responsible for strengthening relationships between ISA and key stakeholders. Gemma has built her successful career as a skilled leader bringing complex stakeholders together, solving complex problems and leading and driving outcomes.

Gemma was also previously a trustee director of
AustralianSuper, a director of Industry Fund Services and a member of the senior team at the ACTU. She worked in senior roles in the trade union movement for twenty years, including leading organisational reviews for the ACTU. She is a skilled facilitator and enjoys working with boards and teams across a variety of sectors, with her passion being in housing, gender and sustainability.

Qualifications

Gemma is a director of the progressive think tank Per Capita and holds a Master’s degree in Communication from RMIT, an Honours degree in Women’s Studies and Politics from Monash University and is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors course.

Marc Levy

Founder and Chair

Dr Marc Levy is the Founder and Chair of Right Lane Consulting. Marc has been in management consulting for over 30 years. In that time, he has facilitated more than 800 board and executive team strategy offsites, probably more than anyone else in the country.

Marc is particularly proud of his work advising profit-to-member super funds over 25 years; and the counsel he has provided to around 110 Australian non-profit and public sector clients, including numerous peaks and advocacy organisations, foundations and charities, sporting bodies and public institutions.

Qualifications

Marc holds bachelors and masters degrees in business from Monash and the Melbourne Business School respectively and a PhD from the University of Melbourne.

He is an Executive in Residence at the Melbourne Business School, where he is also on the advisory board of the Centre for Social Purpose Organisations.

Zoe Pappas

Senior Principal

Zoe is a senior principal at Right Lane Consulting. She has been with the firm for 16 years. In the past 3 years, Zoe has worked on nearly 130 consulting projects and facilitated over 200 workshops, primarily with executive teams and boards. Zoe has developed a reputation for clear thinking and communication, including the ability to reframe complex problems making them easier to understand and solve. Her projects consistently achieve high client satisfaction and advocacy ratings, in part because she stays close to clients and their wants and needs. Zoe prides herself on never missing a client signal and always being on top of how directors and executives are thinking about her projects.

Experience

Zoe has extensive experience in leading strategy, planning, growth and organisation projects in the financial services, retail, healthcare and government sectors. Her recent projects have involved:

Facilitating strategic thinking and strategic planning workshops with a multitude of for profit, not-for-profit and government organisations. Facilitating steering committees (including a diverse range of stakeholders and views) as they oversaw a critical organisation change. Developing a strategy and organisation design for a disruptive specialty retailer with a promising growth trajectory.
Working with several organisations in the financial services and travel and leisure sectors to help board and executive teams rethink their vision and purpose statements to help guide strategic decision making.
Facilitating staff and board workshops with one of Australia’s largest industry super funds. Working with a large client team to transform a financial services organisation’s approach to growth strategy, from executing priority growth options to supporting a subcommittee of senior directors to advance the merger agenda.
Leading organisation redesign projects for wealth management, superannuation and telecommunications industry clients. Helping clients to design and operationalise integrated performance management systems, from corporate balanced scorecards to individual KPI frameworks. Working with marketing, business development and operations teams to improve the effectiveness of their structures, processes, resource allocation and performance management.

Qualifications

Before joining Right Lane Consulting, Zoe had 15 years’ experience in operational and management roles. She was previously a business manager, financial controller and management accountant in the publishing, entertainment, communications and IT security industries. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from Melbourne Business School.
